Watford 2 Leicester City 1: Schmeichel own goal seals comeback win

Molla Wague and Abdoulaye Doucoure inspired Watford s turnaround as the Hornets came from behind to defeat Leicester City 2-1 in the Premier League on Tuesday.

Leicester had fought back valiantly for a last-gasp 2-2 draw with Manchester United on Saturday and their impressive improvement under Claude Puel looked set to continue when Riyad Mahrez headed home midway through the first period to score for the third straight game at Vicarage Road.

But Mali defender Wague, who spent the second half of last season on loan with the Foxes, marked his first Premier League start with the equaliser on the stroke of half-time in an entertaining Boxing Day clash.

Doucoure then did brilliantly to force the winner, stretching to keep Tom Cleverley s deep free-kick in p…

M´Vila set for Arsenal switch

Arsenal have reportedly reached an agreement with Stade Rennes to sign defensive midfielder Yann M Vila for 17.7 million pounds this summer.

The 21-year-old has been one of Arsene Wenger s long-term transfer targets and is set to sign a four-year contract with the Premier League outfit.

Former France and Chelsea defender Marcel Desailly told Goal.com that M Vila is better than Patrick Vieira, who spent nine years with the Gunners, and insisted that if he was the chairman of a Premier League club he would do whatever it takes to sign him.

Wenger has already made in-roads to strengthen his squad ahead of the transfer window by securing the services of Cologne striker Lukas Podolski, while the likely acquisition of M Vila represents a stark contrast to Arsenal s bu…

McCartney joins West Ham

Defender George McCartney has signed a two-year contract at West Ham United after leaving Sunderland.

The Northern Ireland international spent last season on loan at Upton Park and was voted as the players Player of the Year for his performances, which helped the club secure promotion to the English Premier League via the play-offs.

And West Ham have confirmed McCartney has now joined on a permanent basis for the second time, after previously spending two years in east London between 2006 and 2008.

I am delighted to be coming back to West Ham and this time on a permanent basis, the 31-year-old told the club s official website.

It was great to be part of the side that won promotion for the club last season. It was a fantastic way to end the campaign la…

Stoke keen to secure Begovic future

Stoke City are hopeful of agreeing a new deal for goalkeeper Asmir Begovic,.

The Bosnia and Herzegovina international has been with the Potters since January 2010, racking up one hundred and sixty-seven appearances, while he scored a famous goal in a 1-1 draw with Southampton last season.

A number of Stoke’s Premier League rivals have been previously linked with a move for the 27 year old, who is about to enter the final year of his contract at the Britannia Stadium.

Stoke currently have both England international Jack Butland and Thomas Sorenson competing with Begovic for the number one spot, though Begovic is clearly their first choice having missed just six league games over the past three seasons.

Former Portsmouth man Begovic has been capped …

Hayatou vows not to contest FIFA presidency

Acting FIFA president Issa Hayatou has stated he will not contest the presidency on a permanent basis, insisting he will replace the suspended Sepp Blatter as an interim measure only.

Hayatou as the longest-serving vice-president on FIFA s Executive Committee is to serve as interim president following Blatter s 90-day suspension.

FIFA announced on Thursday that Blatter, alongside presidential candidate Michel Platini and general secretary Jerome Valcke, had been suspended following approval by the governing body s adjudicatory chamber of a recommendation made by the organisation s ethics committee.

It follows allegations that Blatter signed an unfavourable contract with the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) in 2005, one that experts claim handed over World Cup tele…

Newcastle midfielder Shelvey to miss Benitez´s Liverpool return

Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez has confirmed Jonjo Shelvey will sit out Saturday s Premier League game at Liverpool.

The former Reds midfielder misses his return to Anfield with a knee injury, with Benitez waiting on scan results to see the severity of the problem.

Shelvey has played 21 Premier League games this season and his absence will be a blow for Newcastle, who are two points above the relegation zone.

Islam Slimani, yet to make his Newcastle debut after joining from Leicester City on loan in January, is also a doubt.

Jonjo Shelvey has a knock to his knee and he will not be available, Benitez told reporters on Friday.

We are waiting on the results of the scans. We don’t know how serious it is. He wants to train and play but we have t…

Juventus in Martial pursuit

The Mirror understands that Juventus have met with representatives of Manchester United forward Anthony Martial as they look to secure his services this summer.

The France international’s future has been the subject of much speculation, not least since they signed Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal in January.

Martial’s current contract runs until the summer of 2019 with the option of a further year, so it would take a fee greater than what the Red Devils paid to Monaco for him in the summer of 2015.

Since arriving in England the twenty-two year old has played one hundred and twenty-nine times while he has scored thirty-six goals.

He helped the side clinch the FA Cup in his first season while he added the League Cup and Europa League to his roll of hono…
